My #FavouriteThing today was my kids. I spent the day (literally all day: 7:30 am – 9:30 pm) at dance festival with Kids #1&3. I was extremely proud of them, and all the girls they dance with, when they placed first in all three of their group numbers today.
Kid #1 also had a solo this morning, and it didn’t go as well as she’d hoped. It was her first time dancing a solo at competition, and I thought she danced well. There are more opportunities coming for her to prove to herself that she’s as awesome as the rest of us think she is. But, it did take its toll today, and there was a period of dealing with disappointment. I was doing her makeup change after her morning numbers, readying for the afternoon numbers, and she just quietly leaned into me and stayed there, safe with my arms around her, for a couple of minutes. No words, a few tears…leaning into Mumma. As much as I hated the torture and challenge of that moment for her, I loved the grace and trust with which she leaned into me for support, and I was glad I could be there for her, fully present.
When I got home, many hours later, I had a little snuggle with Kid #2 and just her how much I love her and how proud I am of her…just for being her…and I watched her get all shy and sweet and proud of being told how great she is.
And now, as I’m lying here writing this, I’m listening to Kid #3 in the shower, singing harmonies along beautifully with Marianas Trench.
I have amazing children, and I’m infinitely proud of them. That’s my favourite thing today: my kids.
