My #FavouriteThing today was spending the day at the shooting range with my friend Jordi. You have to understand – before today, I had never held a gun before in my life. And had had no interest in doing so either. But a couple of years ago, I watched Holly Hunter in the series Saving Grace, where she plays a cop…and ever since, I have wanted to learn to shoot a handgun. Only on a range, under extremely controlled, extremely safe conditions. But I have totally wanted to learn. Jordi and I have talked about going to the range a few times, given that he has guns and knows his shit, but funny enough – he didn’t remember any of those conversations when I texted him earlier this week, “Hey Jordi, let’s go shoot some shit.” But he was a gamer. So to the range we went. He taught me how the gun works, the different parts that are involved in the firing of the bullet once the trigger has been pulled, how to load the clip – or is it called a magazine? – (holy shit, that’s really hard on the 9mm!!), how to use the safety, how to…I want to say how to cock it, but in that it wasn’t a revolver, I don’t know if that’s the right term or not….he taught me all the Very Important Things. And then he taught me how to sight it, when to have my finger on the trigger and more importantly, when NOT to have my finger on the trigger… And then I shot the shit out of the target. Turns out, I’m a good shot. Got me a couple bullseyes today. Then he got me to shoot with his other gun, which scared the bejeebus out of me…it’s a semi-automatic something-or-other. Like the guns they use to shoot up schools and horrific things like that. I didn’t much want to shoot that gun, but I did try it, and eventually, using it one shot at a time with a target, it was pretty fun to shoot too. I felt like a sniper in a movie. Only I was sniping targets on wood stuck in the sand. (Way better!) I wasn’t sure how much I was going to like shooting a gun at the range. Turns out, I reeeeeeeally like shooting a gun at the range. But boy, oh boy, who knew it was so hard on your body? I’m going to be some kind of sore tomorrow….
And may I just say that I NEVER EVER EVER anticipated that guns would play any part in my favourite things on any day. Ever. Ever. Ever. Go figure.
I also am very happy to have the freedom to go to bed at 9:00 tonight. Apparently, being at the shooting range for 3 hours is exhausting. And so I am going to bed to sleep a long, fabulous night of awesome sleep.
